Our 1,000th hackathon is Hack UCSC, which takes place this weekend Jan 29-31th in Santa Cruz, California. It’ll be packed with high school students, college students, and mentors working on overdrive. I know organizing a hackathon is a caffeine intensive activity, so we’ve dispatched a mammoth Starbuck’s gift card to help the team stay on their game as the event kicks off tomorrow.
In the 2.5 years I’ve been leading Devpost’s hackathon activities, hackers have created nearly new 23,000 projects.
It’s impossible for me single out any particular hackathon, as any event that inspires a hacker to learn and create is special — however, it’s fitting that number 1,000 is a collegiate event.
The growth of hackathons in the past two years, especially collegiate events, has been incredible. It’s been the product of an incredible community dedicated to supporting and inspiring hackers of all kinds, worldwide. It’s a great privilege for me and Devpost to be part of this community with you all.
As part of this celebration, I thought it would be fun to show just how global the hackathon movement has become. In the map below, every country highlighted in green has run a hackathon with Devpost:

Clearly there many countries with great developer communities missing here. *I’m looking at you Nigeria. *And this year, one of my personal goals is to help spread hackathons to 10 new countries. No matter where you are, we want to help you spread the love.
Happy Hacking
